O homem que a 30 de abril de 1993 invadiu a quadra de tênis em Hamburgo para atacar a tenista Monica Seles, Gunter Parche, morreu aos 68 anos...
A morte de Parche aconteceu em agosto de 2022, mas só agora foi tornada pública.
A história começou em abril de 1993 num jogo entre Magdalena Maleeva e Monica Seles, válido pelas quartass de final de um torneio de tênis na Alemanha...
No intervalo, quando Seles estava ganhando por 6-4 e 4-3, ouviu-se um grito da jogadora depois que Parche, de 38 anos na época, entrar invadir a quadra, agarrá-la pelas costas e apunhalá-la com uma faca de 23 centímetros.
O homem tentou dar uma segunda facada, mas foi impedido pelos seguranças...
Seles ficou lesionada e não conseguiu terminar o jogo, enquanto Parche foi preso.
Naquela época foram foram afastadas razões políticas, mas rapidamente ele confessou que sua idolatria e amor por Steffi Graf o tinha levado a ter raiva de Seles...
De fato, Seles, de apenas 19 anos, era a número um do tênis, e dividia a liderança com a alemã Graf de 22 anos, mas no momento do ataque Seles já a tinha ultrapassado.
Parche não gostou que Graf fosse a segunda e decidiu atacar Seles de forma a que não conseguisse jogar mais, para que Graf voltasse ao primeiro lugar...

Foi ainda revelado, anos mais tarde, que Parche chegou a enviar várias cartas anônimas, até com dinheiro, à alemã...
Numa delas, declarou: “Eu andaria no fogo por ela, ela é uma criatura sonhadora cujos olhos brilham como diamantes e cujo cabelo brilha como seda.”
Depois disso, Parche recebeu apenas uma pena suspensa de dois anos, da qual Seles ainda recorreu para obter um novo julgamento, mas sem sucesso...
O advogado de Parche argumentou que o seu cliente sofria de uma deficiência intelectual e que sua intenção era apenas lesionar Seles para que ela não pudesse jogar por algum tempo.
A jogadora, indignada com a situação, declarou: “Ele volta à vida dele, enquanto eu ainda não posso, porque estou me recuperar do ataque que poderia ter me matado. Parece que as pessoas esqueceram que esse homem me atacou intencionalmente e que não foi punido"...
Este ataque acabou por traumatizar Seles, que, embora tenha conseguido ultrapassar os seus medos e voltar a jogar, não conseguiu recuperar a regularidade e o nível de antes, embora tenha vencido o Open da Australia de 1996.
Seles ainda conquistou o bronze olímpico de duplas pelos Estados Unidos em 2000 e jogou oficialmente até 2003, quando uma lesão a levou a desistir do Open da Austrália.
Seles anunciou a sua retirada em 2008.
No total, ganhou nove Slams.
Já Parche, que sempre se recusou a falar em público sobre o atentado, terminou sozinho até acabar numa casa de repouso alemã localizada na cidade de Nordhausen, onde passou os últimos 14 anos de vida.
De acordo com o jornal Bild, Parche morreu depois de ter sido encontrado inconsciente, com causa da morte natural, no seu quarto.

Seles still won the Olympic doubles bronze for the United States in 2000 and played officially until 2003, when an injury forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open.
